Even Global

Thursday, June 26th, 2014

An article in the Lancet in August 2011 talked about the global obesity pandemic. Global food businesses are feeding us junk food because it is cheaper and they can make a lot of money from doing this.
The authors of the study maintained that governments are to blame because they have abdicated their responsibilities for addressing obesity.

What can we do about it?
Make real food a priority. One thing I have done even though it’s a little thing, and right now expensive, I have stopped buying “ice cream” filled with high fructose corn syrup. The organic ice cream is a $1 or 2 more but it is made from real food.

I have tried to buy organic food for years, sometimes I just can’t find the organic food I want.

As a group we can let our legislators know that health is important to us and if they don’t think it’s important we’ll find legislators who do and elect them to office.

Our current Congress is more focused on fighting the president because he is half-black than to help our country. They disguise their actions so well that even 13 percent think they are doing a good job.

Time to take our country back and then get on a HEALTHY TRACK before the pharmaceutical companies bankrupt our country.

Change in America’s Health

Sunday, June 22nd, 2014

Do you really want to change your lifestyle into a healthier and happier existence? Start with changing your diet. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Eat less red meat. Cut back on dairy. Exercise! Get up and walk about the house every 2nd commercial on TV. Most of those adds are for sick people or an inducement for you to become sick. Walk around the block after each meal. Move! Stand up! Stretch and touch your toes (you can’t see them – better start right now by putting away those junk food snacks.)

Do you realize that your health is YOUR personal responsibility? Your health is not up to your doctors, the healthcare system, or your genes. Your genes may make you predisposed to somethings but your actions can overcome those things in most cases.

Can you honestly look at your diet and make the changes to whole foods, far less red meat and dairy products, and begin that change today?

Find a doctor who doesn’t want to start with a prescription but rather a life change.

Good health to you.

Seduction by Industries

Saturday, June 21st, 2014

The big food and pharmaceutical industries have been seducing and luring us into becoming fatter and sicker. What are “normal” people doing – eating processed foods, eating a lot of red meat and just sitting around. So we think we can just do as “normal” people and watch our health care costs skyrocket and we depend on more and more medications and surgeries to help us live longer.
Or we may use our genes as an excuse to ignore diet and lifestyle living.

Ask yourself: Do the pharmaceutical companies want to make more money? Why does the food industry use the cheapest way of making food available?

The answer to both is greed. The main reason why pharmaceutical companies want to keep you alive is so that you refill that last prescription. They don’t want a cure – there is a cure for cancer but if everyone followed that where would the pharmaceutical companies put all that medicine? Most food shoppers want to buy at the cheapest price so poisoned food is cheaper to make than organic.

Did you realize that if our government would subsidize organic farmers as much as they subsidize the other farmers the prices would be about the same and the health of the nation would improve.

You can do something about it.

Creating Conscious Health

Friday, June 20th, 2014

Dr. Kathryn Collins writes in her book “How Healthy Is Your Doctor” that we should create conscious healthy living. It begins with the awareness that every action you take from getting up in the morning to going to bed at night and beyond can be an awareness of doing the healthy thing.
What habits support your health and what habits make your health worse. Taking deliberate conscious steps each day soon becomes a habit and you can cut back on the junk food and fill it in with healthy whole food such as fruits and vegetables.
You begin to realize that it is YOUR choice toward a more healthy lifestyle or move towards disease and early death.

Dr. Collins gives the example of President Bill Clinton who was well-known for his fondness of burgers, barbecue, and junk food until he had his first heart attack and then had a quadruple bypass in 2004. He made small changes until his second heart attack in 2010. He was recommended to eat a more plant-based diet. Going vegan he lost a lot of weight and today looks and feels great.

Some people will follow a heavy plant-based diet but still have some junk food on occasion. One source estimates that a person taking this approach could lose up to 30 pounds in a year.

What’s your choice?

Your Gut

Thursday, June 19th, 2014

Think of your gut as one big ecosystem. It contains 500 species of bacteria that amounts to 3 pounds of your total body weight.
This whole new field of research on microbes and body weight points out the possibilities that your bacteria may control your weight more than what you eat.
This explodes the myth that it’s just calories in-calories out.

Gut bacteria thrive on what you feed them.
If you feed them whole, fresh, real foods, good bugs will grow.
If you feed them junk foods bad bugs will grow.

Harmful interaction between bugs and host can create “leaky gut”. Then the poisons and toxins will damage your gut lining.

And you know that YOU have the choice to eat healthy or harmful.

Fast foods are harmful.

One Cause of Inflammation

Friday, June 13th, 2014

“Dietary sugars and refined flours are the biggest triggers of inflammation. They cause insulin levels to spike and start a cascade of biochemical reactions that turn on genes and lead to chronic and persistent inflammation. This begins a downward spiral into more inflammation, more insulin resistance, poorer blood sugar control, and more disease.
“However, it is not just sugar, but also artificial sweeteners that drive inflammation. . . .Diet drinks and artificial sweeteners of all stripes likely increase insulin resistance.
“Lack of fiber, too many inflammatory omega-6 fats (soybean and corn oil), and not enough anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats (fish oil, flaxseeds) also contribute to the development of systemic inflammation, and that leads to worsening insulin resistance.” page 103, The Blood Sugar Solution, by Mark Hyman

In other words cut back on all artificial sweeteners and omega-6 intakes. For example, salmon, as much as it has omega-3 fatty acids when it is farm raised on corn (omega-6) looses it’s benefits because of the omega-6.

American Heart Association National Convention

Monday, June 2nd, 2014

I am going to the Citizen’s CPR Foundation at the ECCU Conference and the AHA this week. I will learn any new procedures and techniques dealing with CPR and AEDS. Citizens CPR today is hands on only. So everyone should learn about CPR. If you’re not strong enough to perform CPR yourself you can at least call 911 or find the closet AED and help out in times of need.
Sometimes smaller adults or children cannot compress the chest enough to keep the blood flowing but they can still be valuable in an emergency.
Hopefully you will never need to actually perform CPR but you are ready if necessary.
Here in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul the survival rate is in double digits today. When I had my cardiac arrest in 2007 the survival rate was only 5 percent. Nationally today it’s around 7 percent.
