Autism Study Halted By Overjoyed Parents

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

As much as I would love to report otherwise, the autism epidemic is getting worse.

The official numbers for autism diagnosis is now 1 in 100, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services. It used to be 1 in 150. And in the 1980s, it was around 1 in 2,500.

It also strikes males 4 times more often than females.

The cause of autism

Many theories exist about what causes autism, including:

– mercury in vaccinations
- genetics
- environmental toxins (including heavy metals, pesticides and flame retardants)
- viral or bacterial infections
- disruption of early fetal brain development and
- diet

(I personally know three different people who swear their kids were completely normal in every way up until the day they had their MMR vaccine…and now they are autistic.)  Hundreds more have contacted me and told me the same thing about how their kids changed immediately after vaccines.

Although the causes of autism is highly debated, what happens afterward is not in doubt and is not debated.

Most of them have chronic digestive problems, including leaky gut syndrome and high levels of the bacteria Clostridium tetani in their systems.

This has lead to increasing research into the links between autism and intestinal flora.

The link

According to Mark Brudnak, PhD, author of “The Probiotic Solution,” a child may have a reaction to a vaccine or an infection that disrupts how certain genes in their body switch on or off. This can cause malfunctioning in the child’s immune and digestive systems.

When this occurs, proteins are no longer properly broken down in the GI tract. Also, the good bacteria and healthy cells in the intestinal walls die off, the bad bacteria (like Clostridium tetani) flourish, and the gut lining becomes like a sieve (called leaky gut syndrome).

When the gut wall is leaky, incompletely digested proteins like casein (the protein in dairy products) and gluten (the protein in wheat, barley and rye) seep out into the bloodstream.

Then these proteins can travel to the brain and cause it to trigger opiate-like effects (like being on morphine), which is a common symptom of children with autism.

That’s why parents of autistic children are frequently told to eliminate both casein and gluten from their child’s diet…and they see great results when they do.

The promise of probiotics for autism

Since probiotics are effective in helping to alleviate leaky gut syndrome and achieving a healthy flora balance, many researchers and forward-thinking healthcare professionals now recommend probiotics for children with autism.

And the results have been VERY encouraging.

One medical study in particular has proven so successful that the study technically “failed,” according to a New Scientist report on September 9, 2006.

The study, lead by Professor Glenn Gibson at Reading University, UK, found that autistic children vastly improved their concentration and behavior when given probiotics.

He studied 40 autistic children, aged 4 to 8. Half were given the probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus Plantarum while the other half received a placebo. The parents were asked to record their children’s mood and behavior in a diary.

It was supposed to have been a blind study, where the participants were not told who was taking the actual probiotics and who was taking placebos.

But the results were too obvious. Parents whose autistic children were taking the actual probiotics saw such drastic improvements in their children’s behavior that they knew their children were taking the real thing.

This lead to problems at the crossover point of the study, where the two groups were supposed to switch medicines. The parents whose children were taking the real probiotics refused to make the switch because their children had improved so dramatically!

Pretty darn conclusive.

That’s why the study was considered a “failure…”

…because the second half couldn’t be completed. But the results spoke for themselves…the probiotic was a massive success.

Hundreds of similar studies have been and are currently being conducted that provide hope for children with this devastating condition.

Antibiotics Kill All Bacteria – Bad & Good

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

Dr. Byran Richards, Wellness Resources, writes

An article in the Canadian Medical Association Journal shows that individuals on calcium channel blocker blood pressure medication who then take a macrolide antibiotic to fight an infection can experience low blood pressure that increases their risk of falling and breaking bones or winds them up in the hospital.  The antibiotics poison a liver enzyme system that so that it is unable to clear the toxic substance that is politely referred to as a blood pressure medication, in turn causing levels of the calcium channel blocker to elevate resulting in a medical emergency from toxic drug induced low blood pressure.

The problem is significant as there were 90 million prescriptions for calcium channel blockers in 2008 (Norvasc, Procardia, Plendil, Adalat, Cardizem, Dilacor and Tiazac) and 66 million prescriptions for macrolide antibiotics in the same year.  The problematic ones are erythromycin and clarithromycin, but not azithromycin.

Antibiotics are not wonder drugs, they are poisons which poison your liver and seriously alter your digestive health in a way that induces metabolic problems and eventual disease down the road.  Their rampant overuse for decades has induced superbugs that threaten the health of a nation.

Danger of Genetically Modified Soy

New report details health and environmental damage from GM soy

An in-depth report highlighting the health and environmental harm caused by genetically modified Roundup Ready soy was released last fall.

The report, “GM Soy: Sustainable? Responsible?,” was compiled by a group of international scientists and highlights new research by Argentine government scientist, Professor Andrés Carrasco, which found that glyphosate causes malformations in frog and chicken embryos at doses far lower than those used in agricultural spraying.

The report challenges commercial claims that GM soy cultivation is sustainable and that the glyphosate herbicide it is sprayed with is safe.

Benefits of Omega-3

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Sherry Brescia of Holistic Blends Inc., Syracuse, NY relates:

Studies are showing that omega-3 fatty acids in the form of high grade fish oil can help ease the chronic inflammation associated with Crohn’s and UC, which can help prevent attacks and prolong periods of remission.

Here are some exciting illustrations of this:

In a randomized, clinical trial, omega-3 supplements were given to patients who were in remission from Crohn’s disease, but who had a high risk of relapse. No additional medications were given–not even steroids.

Another similar group were given placebos with no other medications.

At the end of a year, a whopping 59% (nearly 6 out of 10) of the patients taking the Omega-3 oil supplements were STILL in remission, compared to just 26% of the placebo group.

Not a cure, but one helluva cheap, effective, safe way to go.

Similar findings have been noted for ulcerative colitis sufferers.

In a study conducted by researchers in a St. Louis hospital, 18 patients with active ulcerative colitis (i.e.: having an attack) were treated with either an omega-3 supplement or a placebo.

Those taking the omega-3 supplements were able to cut their steroid medications in HALF–even during an active attack! The placebo group, however, needed MORE medication.

Clearly omega-3 fatty acids are key to reducing the crippling inflammation of IBD

I have been promoting Omega-3 for years because of everything I’ve read. Here is another example of what Omega-3 can do. I use Nordic Naturals, a top grade source for Omega-3 with no fishy aftertaste.
