Sickness vs Health

Thursday, May 1st, 2014

Doctors are trained to treat all kinds of illnesses but are not trained for maintaining health.
Because of this they have forgotten, if they were ever taught, to follow Hippocrates rule “First do no harm”. And “Let food be your medicine”.
Since the pharmaceuticals have taken over our government health programs the first rule they want is to see which expensive medicine can they disperse to the most people. For example several years ago they wanted all, I mean ALL, Americans to be on Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium). Now they are finding the harmful effects of this drug. O, it’s still around but people who do their homework are getting off of this drug just like I did after following a doctor’s experience.
Doctors are not trained to work with alternative means for health, like massage, diet, acupuncture, etc.
The old joke is: What’s the difference between God and a doctor.
Answer: God knows he’s not a doctor.
That old feeling of superiority is changing, especially among the more educated doctors.
Who is your doctor?

Are Drug Companies Helping You Live Longer?

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

“The cholesterol-lowering myth being spread by pharmaceutical companies worldwide could rightly be considered the deadliest health myth in the history of mankind. Numerous studies consistently show that the higher our cholesterol the longer we live and vice-versa. (1)

Statin drugs are the most widely sold pharmaceutical drugs in history. In 2004, Pfizer’s drug Lipitor became the first prescription drug to make more than $10 billion in annual sales. Today it’s over $22 billion.

Cholesterol is a vital substance in our body. Without it we grow sick, losing our memory, weakening our immune system, compromising our hormone levels and increasing our chances of cancer. (2)

Researchers at the University of San Diego School of Medicine tell us that high cholesterol in people over 75 years of age is protective and that low cholesterol is a risk factor for heart arrhythmia, the leading cause of death if a heart attack occurs.

Protecting Your Brain Against Alzheimer’s Dementia

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases are on the rise. The pharmaceutical companies have not found a drug that cures a person. What’s the answer?

It’s so simple that most people don’t know about it. It’s getting proper cellular nutrition.

Studies have shown that one of the largest if not the only cause of neurodegenerative diseases is oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is simply the damage made to our cells by the normal process of metabolism, which creates free radicals.

Antioxidants to the rescue. But some antioxidants don’t pass through the blood brain barrier and then the cells begin to die. To keep a healthy brain we need a good diet, exercise and quality nutritional food supplements. A major factor in the death of brain cells are the statin drugs which take the cholesterol from the body. Without cholesterol, Co-Q10 and other nutrition, the brain cells die and the loss of mental capabilities sets in.

Studies today are showing with proper supplements which will pass through the brain blood cells some of the damaging effects can be reversed.

Again, eat good nutritious food, meditate, exercise regularly and take quality supplements.

An Old Wives Tale

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

One of the old wives tales is that cholesterol is a key factor in heart disease. A lot of money has been funneled into its study and many scientists have based their careers on it. In the 1970s Dr. Kilmer McCully displaced this theory and lost his job over it. Today he is recognized for his study in homocysteine and its place in causing clogged arteries.

Part of the problem is who’s making the money. In this case it’s the pharmaceutical companies as they manufacture cholesterol-lowering drugs. Statin drugs are a 22 billion dollar a year industry. Dr. McCully’s simple method is take foods rich in vitamin B and take supplements as well. The drug companies can’t patent vitamin B so they try to discredit the scientific evidence for homocysteine being the real problem in heart disease.

Kill Your Energy Builders

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Statin drugs like Lipitor kill mitochondria which is the energy maker in our cells. Without mitochondria the whole cell eventually dies. When scientists have done muscle biopsies on people taking statin drugs they find the muscle cells are dying.

Statin drugs such as Lipitor inhibit the body from making any more cholesterol, yet the brain and the gut need cholesterol to reproduce brain cells and neurons in the gut.

This is one reason why numerous people who are taking Lipitor are losing their memory.

The Doctor’s Education

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Since doctors are the people who prescribe your drugs and look out for your overall health, I feel it is important to know where your doctors get their education. Today much of the doctor’s medical education is by drug companies. I know this is starting to change but it’s like making the Queen Mary make a U-turn in the middle of the ocean. It takes a long time.

Doctors go to conferences where they have organized lunch meetings, mostly sponsored by the drug companies touting their latest and greatest new drug. We have so many made-up illnesses today that it is easy for drug companies to tell the doctors only about their new drug and not necessarily the best cure for the patient. And when you’re a drug company making $22 billion a year on a drug like Lipitor you don’t want to tell your clients that omega-3 fish oils does a better job at a lower cost, and with no side effects. Instead you put out television ads proclaiming the wonders of your drug so that the misinformed public clamors for this or that drug. The power of suggestion is great to woo your audience. You tell the audience we’ve been selling this drug for 16 years therefore it must be good. They don’t tell you that people have lost their memory taking the drug. Or that Lipitor kills the mitochondria in your cells making you brain dead. Mitochondria are the energy factory of the cells. The pharmaceutical companies don’t tell you that omega-3 doesn’t take away your memory or your life.

It’s a very forward-thinking doctor who goes to an American Academy for the Advancement of Medicine (ACAM) convention to hear about unusual advances in medicine. Here they hear about nonpatentable medicine and how patients get well without drugs.

Check where your doctor “goes to school.”

Nutritional Supplements

Monday, August 17th, 2009

It’s hard to know where to begin when speaking of nutritional supplements. In 1982, supplement sales amounted to only two billion dollars. By 1999, sales were more than $15 billion, and growing more each day.

Only a couple of decades ago, just a few vitamins and minerals were the only supplements nutritionists needed to know about. Now with all the scientific advances that we have seen and are seeing every day, we’re beginning to understand how these supplements work in the human body.

Traditionally doctors have told us we don’t need supplements. They kept saying that over the years even as they began taking supplements for themselves. The FDA and other branches of our government are slow to come into the 21st century. Because the pharmaceutical companies basically write the laws on food and drugs, and the need for health care, neutraceuticals are being outlawed in many cases. The Food Guide Pyramid is calculated to contain all the nutrients a body needs. They maintain therefore you don’t need supplements if you follow the Food Guide Pyramid. Today we know the Food Guide Pyramid is neither accurate nor complete.

Those who propose taking supplements are often negatively placed into the alternate health care position. But we know there is a profound difference between the absence of scurvy and optimum health when taking vitamin C. And unfortunately until recently the FDA has taken the stance that one size fits all.

Do we buy fire insurance because we know we’re going to have a fire? So nutritional “insurance” will help provide us with a healthy body. Also, many drugs prescribed by doctors drain away vital nutrients. For example, if you are taking Lipitor, your doctor should prescribe Coenzyme Q 10. Mine didn’t. The essential fatty acids in fish oils does a better job than Lipitor in lowering cholesterol. But following that line would make a hugh dent in the $20 billion a year in sales for Lipitor alone. Take away the 95% that is not needed and see where that leaves the pharmaceuticals.

The reason the pharmaceutical companies need to advertise so heavily in print and TV is that thinking people would stop buying all these drugs if not for the scare tactics of the pharmaceutical companies. When people stop buying all these processed foods and go back to whole food without the nutrition taken out the pharmaceutical companies would loose billions and billions of dollars each year and they want to feed the fat cats.

The High Cost of Health Care

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that heart disease will cost  us $475 billion in 2009. Yet many heart conditions are avoidable with low-cost measures such as diet, meditation, and exercise. Some doctors are saying that 70 percent of our surgeries are unnecessary.

The U.S. is a leader in many areas of medical research but we rely too heavily on treatment rather than prevention. As many people say we have a health sick program. Doctors are not paid to prevent sickness they are paid to supply the drug companies with patients who will continue to need the drugs. As I have said before I weaned myself off of the drug Lipitor (a $22 billion a year income for the drug industries). I was given Lipitor for my high cholesterol. Omega-3 does a better job of lowering cholesterol at a fraction of the cost. But the drug companies don’t make money off of fish oil.

Lipitor and other statin drugs are recommended for millions of healthy men and women over the age of 69 but a 2007 analysis in The Lancet found that these medications did not reduce premature deaths in these groups.

I heard at a Town Forum last Saturday, August 1, 2009, that we had the best health care system in the world. The World Health Organization rated America 37th in the world.

As the United States looks to reform the health care system organizations are spending over $1 million a day to keep the status quo – a broken health care system. No one questions that our system is broken but the organizations making big profits from our current system are not concerned about the common person they only want to keep making money.

You can have a voice if you contact your elected government officials and say you want a change.

Aging

Friday, May 29th, 2009

As scientists continue to explore the different molecules and genes, they are finding ways which not only lengthen life but also keep up the quality of life. Who wants to live to be 100 if the last 10 years are filled with disease and dementia?

Dr. Joseph Maroon, a noted neuroscientist and surgeon, takes a definitive look at recent scientific breakthroughs indentifying a group of natural substances that can actually activate a specific set of genes in humans that promote a longer, healthier life. The combination of substances which make red wine, dark chocolate, and green tea good for us seem to put off an array of age-related illnesses.

Resveratrol, which is making news everywhere today, has been isolated by scientists at Harvard Medical School and others, to become affordable and a safe supplement. With these natural ingredients what will become of the pharmaceutical companies? I personally have lowered my cholesterol with omega-3 and no longer take statin drugs (my doctor is watching closely because she wants me back on statin drugs. And that’s what she has been educated to do).

Dr Maroon goes back to Mendal’s experiment with peas in 1856 and brings us through the years how science has isolated genes, chromosomes, cells, DNA, RNA, and on and on. Now they have found out how the skin of red grapes, the green tea and the omega-3 can lengthen our life and increase our vitality. His book THE LONGEVITY FACTOR will give you the answers.

If we would but take the time to learn how we can be healthier, we would find that it would be easier to give up our bad habits of eating empty calories and enjoy a more disease free life.

To your health!

The Achilles Heel of Statin Drugs

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

There is a long trail in the making of cholesterol. And in these steps we find the Achilles heel of the statin drugs.

“The mevalonic acid-HMG-CoA reductase step is but the first step on the long climb to cholesterol synthesis. Many intermediate steps are required before the ultimate goal of cholesterol synthesis is achieved. In at least two of these steps, five carbon units of the enormous steroid class of drugs, destined to be used for other biosynthetic pathways in the human body, are involved. Statin drugs, while curtailing cholesterol biosynthesis, must inevitably inhibit the production of these vital intermediary products. One might say these two simple steps are probably the Achilles heel of the statin drugs, in that the side effects resulting from impaired production of these substances may be intolerable or even harmful to many. . . .The inevitability of significant, serious and even lethal side effects has been knowingly accepted. Production of the ubiquinone coenzyme [CoQ10] is one of these collaterally damaged areas of great concern since the ramifications are both broad and profound. Biosynthesized in the mitochondria—the tiny powerhouse of the cell that is responsible for cellular respiration and energy—ubiquinone functions as a vital and necessary electron carrier to our ultimate respiratory enzyme, cytochrome oxidase. Because of the extremely high energy demands of the heart, this organ is usually the first to feel the statin-associated CoQ10 depletion as cardiomyopathy and congestive heart failure.” (1)

So not only do statin drugs lower cholesterol they also lower CoQ10 and weaken muscles. Now through scientific studies we know that cholesterol is not the culprit in for heart disease. But that’s material for another blog.
